The wife of a former Governor of Osun State, Mrs. Omowumi Akande, has died.
The former governor’s wife, aged 73, died at a private hospital in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday night.
According to a statement issued by Mr.
Femi Akande on behalf of the family, the deceased would be buried at the
Akandes’ country house in Ila Orangun, on Thursday.
Mrs. Akande was said to have passed on after a slight illness.
The statement partly read, “The family
of Chief Bisi Akande, the Asiwaju of Ila Orangun, announces the passing
to glory of our matriarch, Chief (Mrs.) Omowunmi Akande.
“Our mother slept in the Lord at 4.30pm on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.
“Aged 73 years, she will be buried at
10am tomorrow, July 13, 2017 at the Ila Orangun country house of Chief
Bisi Akande. May her soul rest in peace, amen.”
Meanwhile, the Osun State Governor, Rauf
Aregbesola, and the state government have expressed condolences on the
death of the wife of the first interim National Chairman of the All
Progressives Congress.
A press statement by the Commissioner
for Information and Strategy, Mr Adelani Baderinwa, on Wednesday, said
Mrs. Akande died at a private hospital after a slight illness in Ibadan.
Baderinwa said the news of Mrs. Akande’s death was shocking and sudden.
He described Mrs. Akande as hardworking,
a quintessential mother, an enterprising woman, a loving wife and a
caring person to all and sundry.
“Mama was a wonderful woman who will be
missed by many who know her. The government and people of Osun
commiserate with Chief Bisi Akande and the family at large. We pray to
God to accept her soul and rest her in peace,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Mines and
Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has commiserated with Akande over
the death of his wife.
Fayemi, in a statement by his Special
Assistant on Media, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, said the passing of Madam Akande
was sad and devastating.
“Mama was not only a devoted mother to her biological children; she was a mother figure to Baba’s
many political sons and daughters. She was an advocate and adviser
whose words of encouragement and counsel were quite invaluable,” Fayemi
said.
The minister said Mrs. Akande, like her husband, was very much concerned about the peace and wellbeing of the country.
President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, also expressed ‘deep sorrow’ over the death of Mrs. Akande.
Saraki, in a statement by his Special
Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, described the deceased
as ‘a good role model who demonstrated compassion, integrity, character
and lived a fruitful life dedicated to supporting her husband, family
and community.’
The Senate President commiserated with Akande, his family, the government and people of Osun State over the loss.
He stated that Mrs. Akande would be greatly missed for her industry, leadership qualities and exemplary lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor,
Akinwunmi Ambode, and the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,
Mudashiru Obasa, on Wednesday, expressed sadness over the death of Mrs.
Akande.
The governor, in a condolence message by
his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, described the deceased as
an epitome of humility and uprightness.
“She was a shining example of a virtuous
woman, who stood by her husband through thick and thin, especially
during the period he was incarcerated. She kept the home front together
and ensured that his absence did not affect their children adversely,”
Ambode said.
The governor urged the widower to take
solace in the fact that his wife had gone to a better place and draw
strength from the joyful years they shared together.
Also, Obasa said the death of the Akande matriarch came when her wisdom and words of advice were still needed.
Second Republic senator, Chief Ayo Fasanmi, has described the death of Akande’s wife as shocking and devastating.
A text message by Fasanmi to one of our
correspondents, on Wednesday, said the death of the matriarch was a huge
loss to the country in general.
