Fuji star, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, was among
top entertainers that thrilled visitors at this year’s ‘Kayokayo
Festival’, a revered cultural celebration among the Epe people of Lagos
State.
The Fuji act added colour to the
week-long event meant to celebrate the beginning of the new Islamic
calendar and also the historic arrival of Prince Kosoko to Epe in 1851.
Traditional ruler of the community, the
Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom, Oba Shefiu Olatunji Adewale, while giving an
insight into the significance of the annual festival meant to boost
tourism and commercial activities in the area, said with the spate of
road construction and development currently going on in Epe, the area is
set to become the main relaxation and entertainment spot in Lagos and
the entire South-West region.
“Epe is blessed with a lot of historical
and natural sites whose tourism potential cannot be underestimated. For
example, the history of the town is amazing considering the role the
area played in terms of commerce and the movement of people from Lagos
to other parts of the country in the past. Our seaport was one of the
most active in those days with goods transported across different parts
of Nigeria through Epe.
“We use the opportunity provided by this
ceremony to educate our people on health, promote our unique cultural
heritage and also help our youths to develop their skills. We are
confident that with the spate of development going on in Epe at the
moment, there would be thousands of jobs for our people in the very near
future,” he said.
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi
Ambode, a native of Epe, was among high-profile guests who graced the
historic and colourful occasion.
