Fast rising Nigerian singer currently based in the US, Gabzy, told Saturday Beats
that he never intended to become a singer. He said that while his
parents wanted him to become a doctor or a lawyer, his heart was set on
being a footballer but that did not work out for him.
“I was born and raised in Peckham,
London which is like a ‘hood’. I did most of my schooling there. But
now, I stay in America till I complete my studies. As a kid growing up
in a Nigerian household, my parents wanted me to be a doctor or lawyer
but my dream was always to become a professional footballer or a
business man. Football didn’t really work out for me due to lack of
opportunities but that didn’t stop my aspirations to be great,” he said.
The singer said that although he had
always had a passion for singing, he did not take it seriously till his
friend advised him that he could make money from his talent. He added
that his brother was also a major influence in his decision to become a
singer.
“I have always had a passion for music, I
used to sing in my primary school choir and love writing poems but as
far as taking music seriously, it was never the plan for me. In
secondary school at lunch time, we used to have rap battles which were
all fun and banter but one of my friends called Muizz saw something in
me and told me I should take music seriously. He had a studio and an
engineer and invited me to sessions often and that’s really how I got
into music. My elder brother also influenced my decision to become a
singer. He is a producer and engineer. He has been producing since he
was13 years old. My paternal grandfather was also a singer as well,” he
said.
