Film-makers reject dubbing of Chinese films into Yoruba, Hausa

L-R: Odule and Kosoko
Akeem Lasisi
Top indigenous film-makers and actors that include Dele Odule, Jide Kosoko and Tunji Bamisigbin have opposed an alleged plan by a pay-TV provider, Star Times, to broadcast Chinese films dubbed into Yoruba and other indigenous languages.
According to them, the development is capable of destroying the indigenous film industry.
They spoke at a briefing held at the LTV complex, Ikeja, Lagos, last Wednesday.

At the event attended by actors, producers and marketers, including Yemi Solade, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdurasak and Tunji Ojetola, they called on the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and the National Assembly to stop the move that they described as one that can cause cultural erosion.
In his speech as the President of the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria, Odule said, as stakeholders, they had the responsibility to act as gate keepers to monitor and regulate practice in Nigeria.
He said it was also part of their duty to preserve cultural values and the economic gains that the industry was bringing to the country.

He said, “Today, the Nigerian film industry is enmeshed in problems of the misapplication of the almost endless possibilities provided by technology, which is devastating the not-so-strong structure on which the industry operates. Already it is overwhelmed by all manner of abuse ranging from the cankerworm of the Nigerian kind of piracy where pirates operate in the same market with right owners, to the selling of all manner of foreign films uncensored, and sales of hard copies of dubbed foreign films in the Yoruba Language, made in Alaba, with the connivance of unscrupulous Yoruba people, leaving practitioners worse for it.
“You may have observed, as you pass by some bus stops in Lagos, a convergence of youngsters watching some Chinese or Indian films that have been dubbed into distorted and uncouth dialogues in Yoruba.
“The more shocking development is that there is an attempt by the Chinese to institutionalise the trend, with Star Times to serve as a TV station dubbing thousands of Chinese films into  Yoruba and Hausa

“We hereby reject this development in its entirety and urge the Federal Government and our regulatory agencies to rise onto their feet and see the danger inherent in this practice and stop the trend. This is totally uncalled for at this time when the Federal Government is looking in the direction of the film industry as a viable alternative to oil in its economic diversification policy.”
Attempts to get Star Times’ reaction on the issue, including calls and text messages sent to the telephone line of the company’s Manager and Head, Public Relations, Mr. Israel Bolaji,  had not yielded fruits as of 7 pm production time on Tuesday.

Hollywood clubs play Nigerian songs — Adekunle Gold

Photo: Adekunle Gold
Tofarati Ige
Music artiste, Adekunle Kosoko, aka   Adekunle Gold, shares fond memories from his recent trip to Los Angeles
Where’s the most interesting place you’ve visited recently?
That should be the movie capital of the world, Hollywood, which is in Los Angeles, California.
 Why did you visit Hollywood?
I went there to attend a concert called Ankara Festival. I had always looked forward to visiting Los Angeles, and this  was a pleasant opportunity to do so.
What were the highlights of your visit?
I visited the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, and I saw first-hand, the names of all the great stars there. I was impressed, and I hoped that someday in the future, my name would also be there. I also saw the homes of a lot of wealthy stars.

How was the weather as of the time you visited?
It was okay. It was neither too cold nor too hot.
What impressed you most about Hollywood?
The ambiance of Hollywood is breathtaking. That alone makes it a favourite tourist destination. There were a lot of interesting places to visit and see things for oneself.
Did you try any local food while there?
I don’t think Americans have local dishes; it’s the same burger and other types of fast food. I spent three days there and I basically ate Nigerian dishes.
Is there any similarity between Nigeria and Hollywood?
I saw my Nigerian friends and I also met with people, who are not Nigerians, wearing ankara. Apart from that, there was nothing else. The difference between both places is so clear!
What was the first thing that struck you when you got off the airplane?
I didn’t have to look for my luggage, it was already waiting for me, and I found that very remarkable.
Most times you are dressed in ankara and  adire fabrics. What was the reaction of Americans to your dressing?
It was more about my music than my dressing because they enjoyed my music. As a matter of fact, I met some new fans who told me that my music is amazing.

Do the people there know anything about Nigeria?
Of course! I partied in a few clubs and a lot of Nigerian songs were played .
Did you experience any culture shock?
It was more about the orderliness of the place. Everything is properly done and that’s so different from Nigeria. That’s the same thing one notices everywhere outside Nigeria, especially in the western world. Even on the roads, traffic rules were strictly adhered to; nobody dared switch lanes anyhow. I also found the peaceful atmosphere and the security amazing.
What are the things you think Nigeria can learn from Hollywood?
The sanity on the road and the ability to maximise the opportunities in the town as a tourist attraction. We have a lot of interesting places in Nigeria that can be developed as tourist sites. If America can be making so much money off Hollywood, then, we can ‘package’ our own places as well.

How would you describe the hospitality you experienced during your visit?
Everything was amazing. I had a great time and there were no issues at all.
Do you prefer travelling alone or in a group?
There’s no fun in travelling alone. I prefer to go with friends.
What’s the best travel advice you can give?
If you’re travelling to a new place, always endeavour to try their food. There was nothing really to try in Hollywood, and that’s why I didn’t eat anything new while there. You should also meet new people, take pictures and have fun. As for me, I’m always with my camera wherever I go. And lastly, you should carry out extensive research before your trip.
Where’s your dream travel location?
That would be Seychelles, Las Vegas, and Nevada.

No big deal signing on fans’ boobs — Lil Kesh

Lil Kesh
Tofarati Ige
Keshinro Ololade, aka Lil Kesh, speaks about his career, relationship with Olamide and his new record label
Was it your childhood dream to become a music artiste?
I have pretty much been around music all my life, and the love for music has gotten me this far. My dad is a pastor and he owns a church. However, it’s not like I made a conscious decision to become an artiste; it grew on me untill I knew this was what I wanted to do.

What was your dad’s reaction to your decision to become an artiste?
My dad was cool with it. He lets you do whatever you want to do. He feels that whatever his life story is doesn’t have to affect the way his children live their lives. According to what he used to tell me, everybody must live his or her individual stories. He watched me grow from being part of the choir, learning to play drums, and attending music shows. Till now, he gives me all the necessary support and respects my decisions.
Considering that your dad is a pastor, isn’t he bothered by your vulgar lyrics?
Those vulgar songs are basically about me doing my job and he doesn’t interfere. Besides, not all my songs are vulgar. I have recorded songs like Ishe, Semilore and others. However, the ones that go viral are the ones with vulgar lyrics. I understand my markets, and I know the demography I’m directing my music to, which is the youth and adults. I’m a blunt entertainer, but I consider my fans, and always try to give them what they want. But this year, I decided that I’ll feed my fans with more meaningful songs that will inspire them.
What inspires you to write such vulgar songs?
Most of those songs were not written; we just go into the studio and ‘vibe.’ However, my environment inspires me and it’s not like I deliberately try to be vulgar.
Beyond the stage persona, who is Keshinro Ololade as a person?
I have a dual personality in the sense that I could go into the studio and come up with crazy songs that would entertain people. I could also be home alone relaxing, and listening to soft and mid-tempo songs. Listening to my songs, some people may think I’m a loud and local boy, but they’re usually surprised when they meet me and see that I’m calm and cool-headed. I’m not that outgoing, except if I have to attend events.
What’s your educational background?
I went to a number of primary schools, all in Lagos. I also attended secondary school in Lagos before proceeding to the University of Lagos to study Linguistics. However, I had to defer my admission because of my hectic schedule. Right now, I’ve enrolled at the National Open University, where I’m studying Mass Communication.
Some people believe you came out of nowhere to rise to the top in the music industry.  Can you share some of your struggles?
I have always been a hustler. I started my career by attending several talent hunt competitions, and I won some of them which made me quite popular in school. At a point, I was always hanging around studios because I had no money to record songs.
How did you meet Olamide?
I recorded a song titled Lyrical in late 2013, and Olamide heard it sometime in 2014. Apparently, he loved it, and he said he wanted to meet me. When I met Olamide, he had a contract ready for me, and that was how my career kick-started. I was blessed enough to record a hit song within months, and my career has been growing ever since. I have always seen Olamide as a king, and I even respect him more now.
How would you describe Olamide as a boss?
Despite the fame and fortune around him, Olamide is just like the guy next door. He is easy-going and down-to-earth. He is friendly with everyone and he could eat from the same plate with you without airs and graces.
Was it really your label mate, Viktoh, who introduced you to Olamide?
Yes. Viktoh is a friend to Olamide’s younger brother, DJ Enimoney, and he had known Olamide for about five years before I came into the picture. We used to meet at some talent hunt competitions, and he was the one that played my song, Lyrical, to Olamide. He actually signed both of us on the same day.
It was reported that there’s bad blood between you and Viktoh?
That’s just the figment of some people’s imaginations. VIktoh will always be my brother. We all have our different times to shine.
Let’s talk about Shoki…
I think Shoki is my biggest song to date. It became popular barely weeks after it was released. Initially, I was in denial because I didn’t know the song was that big. At some point, people like American singer, Missy Elliot, uploaded a video of herself dancing to Shoki. To be honest, it put pressure on me, because it was almost bigger than Lil Kesh, the brand.
Your style of music is similar to Olamide’s. Wasn’t he afraid of you overshadowing him?
No, there’s no competition between us. Olamide built the YBNL family in a way that we all love one another. Even if he is meant to release a song, and one of his artistes also wants to release a song, he would defer his to allow his artiste’s song to be put out. Besides, I won’t say I decided to do music like Olamide; it came naturally to me. We’re both from Bariga, and we have the same musical influences. YBNL has a sound of its own; it is not an Olamide sound, or a Lil Kesh sound.
Do you feel you know enough about the music industry to float your own record label?
Olamide brought us up to know every single detail about the music business. There weren’t many protocols, and he made me know all the industry contacts needed for distribution, promotion, PR and basically all parts of the business. He didn’t treat me like an artiste, but as a brother. Anyway, my label, YAGI is directly under YBNL. Olamide still handles the business for me. I’m just responsible for myself financially, but anytime I want to drop a new single or video, Olamide knows about it. YBNL is still Lil Kesh’s management, and the idea of floating a new label was a joint decision.
When will you be signing your own artistes?
It might not be anytime soon, but we’re definitely going to do that. When I feel mentally and financially ready, I will cross that bridge. Right now, there’s still a lot of work to be done on Lil Kesh.
Do you still visit Bariga where you grew up?
No, I don’t.
Why is it so?
It’s called the hood for a reason, and I have to consider a lot of things before going. I’m like a king in Bariga, and a lot of people love me there. If I’m to go there, it has to be a grand entry with security in place because a lot of people would definitely troop out to the streets. Besides, my family does not stay there anymore. I have relocated them to a better neighborhood.
You have found fame and fortune at an early age. How have you been able to manage it?
I always say I may be 22 years old biologically, but in my head, I’m older than that. Age is not maturity. It is your experience that makes you, and I have seen a lot. From being in the ghetto to living a better life; these things have built me.
Let’s talk a bit about the Headies. Did you feel robbed that you didn’t get the Next Rated Award?
I have put that behind me as it isn’t relevant to my career. As far as I’m concerned, my award is living a good life. Awards don’t determine which artiste is the best. So far you are nominated for an award, you are a winner already.
You have also been nominated for this year’s Headies. Will you be motivating your fans to vote for you?
It’s not just about me and how I feel about these things, it’s about my fans. They supported my music this year, and that’s why the album got nominated. I’m going to post about the award on social media, and appeal to my fans for support.
Can you recall the most awesome part of your career?
Anytime I step on stage and thousands of people are screaming my name.
What’s the craziest experience you have had with a fan?
There was a time I was on Lagos Island, and some street boys stopped all the cars on the road, saying nobody should move until they had all taken pictures with me. It was crazy on that day as their action caused massive traffic build-up.
Has any female fan ever asked you to sign on her boobs?
Those things happen and I don’t even consider them as crazy anymore; it’s a normal thing.

Tiwa Savage, Teebilz unite again

Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz (File Photo)

There is an indication that singer Tiwa Savage and her estranged husband, Tunji Balogun, may have decided to patch up the broken bits of their marriage and start again. The gossip mill is agog with a story that the couple has been making moves to reunite after a stormy breakup that generated so much noise in the mass media a couple of months ago.
Evidence that critics have been watching the celebrity couple closely emerged on Wednesday when a popular Nigerian blog reported that Tiwa and her husband had been attending a counselling clinic somewhere in Lagos. The report also insinuated that the couple were seen attending an event together on one occasion.

If this is true, it means that the celebrities must have made up their minds to push their differences aside and rekindle the spark in their relationship. This is by all means good news to many fans of the singer, who have privately wished for a development of this nature.

Zahra Buhari gets new wedding date

A new date has reportedly been fixed for the wedding of President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Zahra.
The new date for the wedding, which was postponed last week, is December 16, according to an invite for the wedding which is making the rounds.

“H.E Haj Aisha M Buhari cordially invites you to the wedding Fatiha of her daughter Zahra Buhari and Ahmed Indimi which will take place on December 16th while the Kamu will take place in Abuja. Details of the events will be communicated to you,” the invite states.
The wedding was said to have been postponed as a result of President Buhari’s insistence on a low-key wedding for the 21-year-old bride to be, Daily Trust reported.

It was gathered that the president was uncomfortable with the attention the media was giving to the event, especially reports that the groom’s family presenting 30 Louis Vuitton bags to Zahra.
It was widely reported that the groom, Ahmed Indimi, had presented bags, worth about £120,000 (N47,144,502), to the bride ahead of the wedding.

An introduction ceremony between both families had earlier held at the Aso Villa, Abuja on Friday, November 18, with the wedding programme scheduled for between November 30 and Sunday, December 4, 2016.
Indimi is the marketing director of Oriental energy resources.

Thirteen-year-old gets third Grammy nomination

Indonesian child prodigy Joey Alexander, who has awed crowds with a piano skill beyond his years, was again nominated for a Grammy Award on Tuesday for Best Improvised Jazz Solo.
The 13-year-old was nominated for his take on “Countdown” off John Coltrane’s classic work “Giant Steps,” which appears on Joey’s second album.

Joey has pulled in growing media attention and audiences drawn to the sight of the bespectacled boy who plays the piano with precocious poise and feeling.
He was also nominated for two Grammys at this year’s awards but did not win. The latest awards will be presented at the music industry’s annual gala in Los Angeles on February 12.

Joey is up this year against some of the biggest names in jazz — including Coltrane’s son Ravi Coltrane, who is nominated for a saxophone solo on the collaborative album “In Movement.”
Also nominated in the category are two leading jazz pianists, Brad Mehldau and Fred Hersch, and fusion guitarist John Scofield.
Mehldau, Hersch and Scofield are all also nominated for Grammys for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, competing against works led by another leading pianist, Kenny Barron, and drummer Peter Erskine.
Born in Bali, Joey took up the piano from an early age as he found inspiration from his parents’ collection of jazz records.

With limited opportunities for formal jazz training in Indonesia, he jammed with adult musicians before his parents eventually moved him to New York.
A profile of him on the popular US television news show “60 Minutes” helped bring his last album onto the weekly Billboard chart of the 200 top-selling US albums — a first for an Indonesian artist.

Veteran actress Mulikat Adegbola is dead

Mulikat Adegbola
Veteran actress, Mulikat Adegbola, popularly known as Ashabi Iya Adinni is reportedly dead. She was said to have died after a brief illness.
Top Nollywood actor, Muyiwa Ademola, confirmed her death.
He said, “This is quite sad but who are we to question the Almighty? Sleep on Iya Adinni. May the Almighty forgive your sins.”

I wasn’t detained in the US because of my breasts –Cossy

Cossy Orjiakor
’Nonye Ben-Nwankwo and Ademola Olonilua
When the godfather of Nigeria’s comedy industry puts something on his social media accounts, people react to it in different ways. Alibaba who is known to be very active on social media, posted on his Instagram on Wednesday that busty entertainer, Cossy Orjiakor, was detained at an airport for over two hours because of her breast.

He wrote, “So @cossyojiakor and I were on the same flight to the USA last month… I had crossed Immigration and even checked in and realised she had not called to say she had checked in… Called later and found out they held her back at the airport for two hours. Why? I asked her. She said they said something about “No dairy products allowed”… Still don’t get it.”
When Saturday Beats reached out to the voluptuous young lady via her spokesperson, it was gathered that she saw the post and laughed about it. She further said that Alibaba was only joking.
“When she saw the post she laughed because she knew that Alibaba was only joking and she does not take things like that to heart. Most times when she reads things about herself in the media, she only laughs. The only time she took offence to a write-up was when she was accused of bestiality but that is in the past. She knows Alibaba was only joking and you can call Alibaba to confirm,” he said.

Cynthia Morgan not my enemy –Queen Ure

Queen Ure
’Nonye Ben-Nwankwo and Ademola Olonilua
Sometime last year, singer, Queen Ure and popular dancehall artiste, Cynthia Morgan, didn’t see eye to eye even as both called each other unprintable names concerning the title of song, ‘Popori,’ which Ure had claimed was hers.

In Ure’s argument, the term, ‘Popori,’ was invented by her and it had become her trademark before Morgan decided to do a song with the same title. Ure had dragged Cynthia to court over the issue.
Since then, so many people believe the two have become sworn enemies but in a telephone conversation with Saturday Beats, Queen Ure said that Cynthia Morgan is not her enemy. She further said that although she does not do collaborations with other artistes, if the need arises, she can collaborate with the dancehall queen.

She said, “I never had any problems with Cynthia Morgan. We can settle an issue legally but that does not mean that it is personal. I have never had any personal issues with her. I don’t do collaborations with other artistes but if there is any reason for that, why not? She is not an enemy, I don’t have any enemy. The reason we went to court was because Cynthia Morgan released the song ‘Popori.’ That was what led to the court case. If there was no release, we would not have gone to court. After going to court, the work was stopped. It was nothing personal, everybody knows that. It was just because ‘Popori’ is my brand and I have been doing a lot of it. It is actually my trademark for both my musical works and my business initiative.

“I made up the word and I had not heard it before. The judgement of the case was delivered on July 1, 2015 and it was in my favour and that is how far we have gone.”
Ure further told Saturday Beats that she doubts she would ever become a pastor again but she is actively involved in charity works. She also said she would never quit singing.

“I am involved in charity work and I always love it. I was a pastor but that was a long time ago. I don’t have a ministry and I don’t intend to be a pastor again because you can decide to do something for a particular time. Reaching out to people doesn’t have to be from the pulpit. I am still doing music. I don’t do my music in a conventional way. I have two albums and each of them has ten songs. I have been singing from childhood but I had to go to school and work. Music has always been a part of me and I have always written and recorded songs. As a teenager, I was always singing Panam Percy Paul’s songs. I have always been singing. I intentionally avoided becoming a gospel artiste. I did not want to limit myself to only doing gospel songs, it was intentional to just be a singer and not restricted to gospel music alone but I write both gospel and secular songs,” she said.

Star Music Trek: Olamide, Flavour, Mr. Raw thrill Owerri

Olamide, Flavour, Mr. Raw
’Nonye Ben-Nwankwo and Ademola Olonilua
The quiet city of Owerri was agog last weekend when The Star Music Trek landed in the city.
The Dan Anyiam Stadium where the concert held was practically filled to its capacity with fans who were so eager to see the A-list artistes billed to perform that evening.

And when the show kicked off around 7pm, there was no dull moment till the wee hours of the morning when it ended.
In fact, it was as if the crowd didn’t want it to come to an end. Who would blame them? With the likes of Kcee, Flavour, MI, Mr. Raw and so many others on the stage, the crowd went haywire as these artistes performed on the stage.

Mr. Raw performed his verse of “My City Rocks” to the delight of the packed crowd at Dan Anyiam Stadium. Their reaction was an indication the night was off to a good start. He ended his performance with the track titled “Blessing”.
And Runtown didn’t get the tempo low, with his ‘Lagos Kampala,’ ‘The Banger’ and some other hits, the young lad also endeared more fans to his heart.
Osinachi crooner, Humblesmith, got so many people smitten not only with his hit track but with his fine looks.  He kept his performance indigenous as he also performed the iconic ‘African Style’ song by Bright Chimezie.

But when MI took the stage,  it was another level of fun. The crowd screamed. The self-acclaimed Chairman gave the crowd what they wanted, dishing out hit songs back to back.
KCee had a marvellous performance at the concert. When he got on stage, the crowd cheered in excited frenzy. KCee sang “Pull Over” and “Limpopo” to the admiration of his Owerri fans.

Olamide continued the party on stage as he performed many hits back-to-back from “Durosoke” to “Story for the gods”, “Shakiti Bobo” and “Lagos Boys”.
And then big boy Flavour came on the stage and the ladies and guys went wild. With his live band, Flavour delivered a commanding performance as he blended most of his popular songs in seamless beat waves.

DJ Cuppy gets G-wagon gift from boyfriend

Billionaire Femi Otedola’s daughter and popular disc jockey, DJ Cuppy, has every reason to be on cloud
nine at the moment. Not only is she grateful to God for adding another year to her age, she is also thankful to her boyfriend, who many believe to be Victor Anichebe, for buying her a G-wagon as a birthday gift.
The ecstatic 24-year-old showed off the white German machine which she claimed her boo bought for her on her Snapchat with the caption, “Omg! I have the best boyfriend ever.” Also, her sister, Temi Otedola posted a picture of the birthday gift with the caption, “boyfriend of the century.”
